Round Two Drama for Mitchell at Desertmartin
Goldspeed ACU British Quad Championships R2
Sunday 9th May 2010
Desertmartin, Northen Ireland
With an impressive three wins out of three for team ATV World Yamaha’s John Mitchell in round one of the Goldspeed ACU British Championships on Saturday 15th May, the scene was set for another explosive day of world class quad racing.
It was Sunday 16th May and the weather held out for yet another beautiful clear blue day. In race one, John got a poor start but fought hard through the pack and by half way he was up into fourth. With over a third of the race gone, he moved into second place. Whilst quickly catching the leader he picked up a stone which caused his chain to break, ending his race. But this only made John and the team more determined to get back out and return to the dominating form seen in round one. John steered his ATV World Yamaha YFZ450R Fuel Injection quad to an utterly awesome victory in race two.
In devastating form, John went into race three with the confidence to win it. Battling with the KTM of Paul Winrow, thrilling the crowds as the two riders began lapping the backmarkers. As John approached one backmarker, the blue flag was waved to allow John through. Unfortunately the backmarker stayed on John’s racing line and forced John over the burm losing him time on the leader and he had to settle for second place.
John said after race three “There wasn’t anything I could do about race one but I showed what I’m capable of with this quad in race two taking the win. I love coming to Desertmartin. It’s a fantastic track and the weekend has been very well organised. I’m confident I would have been a serious challenge for the lead in race three if the backmarker had observed the blue flag. He stayed on my line and caused me to go over the burm loosing me vital seconds in the battle for first place. I will go into round three with a solid determination to succeed in this championship. I won four out of six races this weekend which I am very happy about.”
John is now in second place in the overall championship standings after two rounds. The third round of the Goldspeed ACU British Championship takes place on June 27th at Broadhembury in Devon.
