Location: Armthorpe, Yorkshire |
Holmes Keeps His Sights on Championship Title
With excellent track conditions, this weekend’s action was at Armthorpe in Yorkshire for round three of the IOPD British Pro Class Quad-X Championship. Any doubts that the event would be called off due to heavy rainfall on the few previous days disappeared as the sun came out and the temperature soared.

Qualifying went well as John Mitchell and Paul Holmes came in second and third on their ATV World Yamaha YFZ450’s. John, currently leading both the CCM British MMX Quad Championship and IOPD British Pro Class Quad-X Championship was after a good result as he began race one. Unfortunately his quad overheated and he had to drop the race pace, still making sixth place. Paul Holmes was having an awesome race and took a confident second place, with Ricky Tordoff taking first.

Race two started well for both John and Paul as they made the top five after lap one but disaster struck in lap two when John landed awkwardly on a big jump and snapped the axle as the quad rolled over. Paul Holmes was riding in forth place and pushing hard when another accident, minutes later caused the race to be red flagged. On the restart, Paul got an even better first lap, and was riding well in third position. With five laps remaining, he started closing on number two Paul Winrow and was closely followed by Willy Waggot who was hustling for the third spot.

Paul Holmes showed some exceptional defensive riding before Willy got through on the penultimate lap and Paul had to settle for fourth. That left Paul Holmes in joint second place on the day and second overall in the championship, closing in on the lead with only three points away from Ricky Tordoff. John has broken his toe and aggravated his ankle however he’ll be working harder than ever to get fit for his next race in two weeks time.

Meanwhile, in the standard 200cc class, ATV World rider Dean Thompson was again having an incredible round; having previously dominated almost every event so far this year, the young man from Ireland again took maximum points. On his ATV World Yamaha Blaster Dean has clearly got his sights set on winning the IOPD Quad-X Championship 200cc Class.
